The Ohio State Buckeyes football team is one of the most famous and successful college football programs in the United States. In recent years, a new group of young players – especially sophomores – has begun to shape the team’s future. These second-year players are already making big impacts on both offense and defense, helping Ohio State compete at the highest level. 

One of the biggest stories this season is Julian Sayin, sophomore quarterback at Ohio State. Sayin arrived in Columbus as a five-star recruit and started his career with a ton of excitement around him. As a sophomore in 2025, he became the team’s starting quarterback, a huge responsibility for any young player. Sayin has shown remarkable poise, accuracy, and leadership in the pocket. As a sophomore in 2025, Smith continues to be a dominant playmaker, drawing defensive attention from his opponents every week. Wide receiver Carnell Tate is another sophomore who has grown into a key role in the Buckeyes’ offense. In his first year, Tate played in every game and showed promise as a future star. As a sophomore, his role expanded even more. Tate recorded 52 catches, nearly 750 yards, and multiple touchdowns in 2024, and he continued to shine in big games. His presence on the field gives Ohio State two dangerous receiving threats, which makes the offense tougher for defenses to stop. 

Sophomores aren’t just helping the offense. They’re making big plays on defense too. One of the most important defensive players for the Buckeyes is Caleb Downs, a sophomore safety who transferred from another school but quickly emerged as one of the best defenders in college football. Downs was a leader on defense, finishing among the team leaders in tackles, tackles for loss, and interceptions. In 2024, he was named to the All-Big Ten team, an honor given to the best players in the conference. His ability to read plays and stop big gains has been vital for Ohio State’s defense. 

While Ohio State’s defense also features veterans and upperclassmen, players like Downs show how much talent the younger group has. They are the type of players who not only help the team now, but who could one day be stars in the NFL. The Buckeyes’ ability to develop young talent is one of the reasons the program continues to win and stay near the top of college football.

Players like Sayin, Smith, Tate, and Downs have already earned that trust. Their performances show they can handle big moments, and they have become leaders in both practice and games. 

Ohio State fans are excited about what the future holds for these young players. If the sophomores continue to improve and stay healthy, the Buckeyes could be contenders for conference titles and even national championships in the coming years. The 2025 season is a great example of how a mix of youth and experience can bring success.
